山形県にある遊佐町の北端の海岸側の地域に伝わる小正月行事で、国の重要無無形民俗文化に指定されている。
秋田の「なまはげ」と良く似た行事で、起源は同じとも言われている。それぞれの地域毎に、アマハゲが各家庭を回り、怠惰を戒めて歩く。

Small New Year's ritual held in the area around the northern coast of Yuza-cho in Yamagata. It has been designated as an significant intangible folk cultural asset.
Very similar to Akita's "Namahage" ritual, and is said to date back as far. The Amahage visits the various homes in the areas to teach against laziness.
