竿燈まつりは、真夏の病魔や邪気を払う、ねぶり流し行事として宝暦年間にはその原型となるものが始まりました。竿燈全体を稲穂に、連なる提灯を米俵に見立て、額・腰・肩などにのせ、豊作を祈るまつりです。
竿燈体験コーナーや屋台村なども行われます。

The Kanto Festival began in the Houreki Period with a night parade to ward off evil spirits and summer sickness. It is now a farming festival where tall lanterns representing ears of rice from all across Akita Kanto, are paraded around, carried on the forehead, lower back and shoulder.
