福島わらじ祭りは江戸時代から300年以上の歴史がある信夫三山暁まいりを参考に、1970年市民の健脚を願って始めた夏祭りです。旧正月14日に片方の大わらじを奉納し、8月にもう片方の大わらじを奉納します。この8月の祭りが福島わらじまつりです。
日本一の大きいわらじを担ぎ市街地を練り歩きます。わらじおどりやダンシングそーだナイトなども行われます。
The Fukushima Waraji (or the Straw Sandle Festival) is a summer festival that began in 1970 to wish for the people of the city have physically strong legs. On the 14th January by the lunar calendar one of two large straw sandal is dedicated to the Haguro shrine. Then in August, during the festival, the other sandal is dedicated to the shrine.
These are the largest straw sandals in Japan to be paraded around a city.
