荘内大祭は荘内神社が創建された事を記念して、旧藩主を慕う庄内一円の人々の総意により始められたお祭りです。市民が一丸となって奉仕する祭りとして、城下町鶴岡を代表する伝統行事となっています。
3日間にわたるお祭りで、１日目は宵祭りと称して様々な神事や伝統芸能の奉納、２日目は旧藩主の参勤交替代を忠実に再現し、総勢400名による荘内藩大名行列が行われ、城下町鶴岡に圧巻の歴史絵巻が繰り広げられます。3日目には例大祭として、締めくくりの儀式を行います。

The Shonai Festival began to celebrate the anniversary of the completion of the Shonai Shrine.
The festival goes on for 3 days, on the second day the feudal lord era is faithfully re-created with a parade of over 400 people in period costumes along with the Shonai clan feudal lord.
