950年余りの歴史と伝統を誇り、青森県の岩木山の神賑祭・長野県別所温泉の岳の幟と並び日本三大旗祭りのひとつに数えられる。ホラ貝の音が響き渡る中、色とりどりの五反旗を翻しながら街を練り歩く。国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定されている。
With over 950 years of history and tradition, it is counted as one of the Japan's top 3 large flag festivals along with Aomori’s Iwakiyama Shinshinsai and Nagano Bessho Hot Spring's Takenonobori. While sounding triton's trumpets, the participants wave the colorful Gohanki flags while parading through town. It is registered as a significant intangible folk cultural asset.
