庄内三大まつりの一つに数えられるお祭りで、学問の神様と言われた道真公が、姿を変え、顔を隠して酒を酌み交わしたという言い伝えから「化けものまつり」という名でも親しまれている。派手な花模様の長襦袢に角帯を締め、手ぬぐいと編み笠で顔を隠した「化けもの」が市内のあちこちで見られ、徳利と杯を持ち無言で酒を振る舞うほか、天狗舞と獅子舞の奉納、道真公行列や手踊り行列など、総勢約2,500人によるパレードが行われる。

Considered one of the Shonai Area 3 Large Festivals, also known as the "Bakemono Matsuri" (Festival of Disguise) since it is said that the God of Learning, Michizane, disguised himself and drank with commoners. The Disguised seen all over town are clothed in a showy flower patterned costume with belt, with a cloth over the face and a straw hat, silently pour a drink for participants, and goblins and lions perform dances, with dance parades throughout town, all performed by about 2500 participants.
