梵天ばやい」とは、豊作祈願の儀式として古くから伝わる伝統行事で、毎年5月1日、保食神を祀る船形山神社の御神体である、金銅菩薩立像が開帳される祭典時に行われます。この祭りは、山の神が春になると水田耕作に先立って山を降りて田の神になり、稲作の豊作を見守り、収穫が終わると再び山へ昇って山の神になるという、この地方の伝承が、そのまま祭の形になっています。社前に奉納された紙シデのついた梵天が、神官により参拝者の中に投げられると、参拝者は梵天をめぐって激しく競い合います。最初に竹軸を地面に立てた者に梵天が授けられ、地区に持ち帰ることが許されます。これを割って各戸にわけ、苗代の水口に立てると水かかりがよく、豊作に恵まれるとされます。宮城県の無形民俗文化財に指定されています。
