『この日にアメを食べると風邪をひかない』と、伝えられるアメッコ市の起源は、天正１６年（１５８８年）頃と言われています。当時は民俗行事でしたが長年行われ続け、昭和４７年から現在のようにおおまちハチ公通り（昭和４７年当時は大町中央通り）で開催されるようになりました。現在の大館市で最も高い山「田代岳」から神様がアメを買いにやってくるという言い伝えを再現した「白ひげ大神（しらひげおおかみ）巡行」や「秋田犬パレード」を始めとした様々なイベントが両日行われます。

It is told that if you eat candies on this day, you will not catch a cold at Candy Market, which started in 1588. It used to be a folk event for a long time, and it is held on Omachi Hachiko Street (called Omachi Center Street back then) like nowadays since 1972. There are various kinds of events such as "Shiro hige ookami (white beard god) Jungyo" reenacting the legend that God came down from Mt. Tashiro, the highest mountain in Odate, and Akita Dog Parade on both days.
