新庄まつりは、宝暦6年藩主戸沢正諶が、前年の大凶作でうちひしがれている領民に活気と希望を持たせ、豊作を祈願するために、戸沢氏の氏神である城内天満宮の「新祭」を領民あげて行ったのが起源とされています。
宵まつり・本まつりには絢爛豪華を競う山車パレード、古式ゆかしい神輿渡御行列、新庄城址で踊られる風雅な萩野鹿子踊・仁田山鹿子踊などが行われます。

Shinjo Festival began in 1756 by Lord Tozawa to pray for a good harvest after the people in his domain had been devastated by a large crop failure the previous year.
Spectacular floats compete with one another and parade down the streets, each one traditionally carrying miniature shrines. Elegant Hagino Kanoko and Nitayama Kanoko dances are also performed at Shinjo Castle.
