天明3年の浅間山の大噴火で、夏の作物が全滅したことによる生活苦・社会不安などを取り除くために、祭礼用の山車を曳き廻して豊作を祈願したのが始まりと伝えられる祭り。　昼間は神話などから題材をとった人形を山車の上に飾り立て、町内を曳き廻しまし、　夜は人形を取り外し、山車の四面に約五百個の提燈を飾りつけた提燈山車に早変わりします。町内の若い衆が、賑やかな笛や鉦・太鼓のお囃子にのせ、関東一といわれる山車を回転させながら市内を巡行します。

Mt. Asama erupted in 1783, destroying everything that had been produced that summer, and creating hardships and unrest in the area. This festival, and the practice of pulling floats down the river, began as a way to pray for good harvests for the following year.
From this legend the modern festival is practiced, with ornate dolls that sit on top of the floats and pulled through town during the day. Then when night comes the dolls are removed and the four sides of the floats are decorated with around 500 paper lanterns.
