古利根川流灯祭は、昭和初期頃に始まり、杉戸町と隣の宮代町との境を流れる古利根川を利用して、杉戸町・宮代町の商店会が協力し、「流燈曾」として、それぞれの店が工夫を凝らした灯篭を古利根川に浮かべるイベントとして始まった祭り。
畳１畳分もある日本一大きな灯篭が川に浮かぶ様子が見どころで、組み立て細工の要領で釘を使わずに全て町の人の手作りで作られています。これが、２００～２５０基。さらに、ミニ灯篭も加えて約１ｋｍにわたり光の帯が川面を埋め尽くすさまは、まさに地上に降りた天の川のようになります。

The highlight of Furutonegawa River Lantern Festival is to see the Japan’s largest lantern, one tatami mat size, floating on the river. All the lanterns are handmade by the people from the town without using nails to be held together. In total, there are between 200-250 lanterns. The mini-lanterns are lit and laid out in rows stretching out over 0.6 miles down the river, creating the effect that the river is a road to heaven.
