江戸時代初期に起こった大日照りのための雨ごい行法が成就したことで、農民たちは狂喜乱舞し上日寺の鐘を打ち鳴らして喜び祝ったのが由来とされています。以来、報恩と厄よけの法会とともに、力自慢の若者たちが長大な松の生木の丸太で、釣鐘を連打、そのため「ごんごん祭り」と名付けられました。祭りのフィナーレで行われる「ゴンゴン鐘つき大会」では、松の丸太を担いで1分間に鐘を突く回数を競い合います。一般の部、女性の部、子どもの部があり、県外からも多くの人が参加しています。

It comes from when farmers pray for rain after the drought in the beginning of Edo period, it rained and they danced wildly with joy and rang the gong in Jonichiji Temple. Since then, with gratitude and prayer for protection, young men who pride on their strength hit the gong many times with long and large pine log, and it is named "Gongon Festival". At the end of festival, participants compete in "Gongon Ringing Gong Competition" where they compete for the number of times they ring the gong with the pine log in 1 minute. There are sections for men, women, and children, and many people come to participate even from outside the prefecture.
