村上大祭は、時の村上藩主が神社（西奈彌羽黒神社）を上（城）から見下ろすのは畏れ多いとして、臥牛山の中腹から現在の場所へ遷座されたことを記念して行われています。羽黒神社の遷宮をお祝いして、大町の人たちが大八車に太鼓を積んで町じゅうを練り回したのが、村上大祭の始まりと伝えられています。
三基の神輿に御神霊を奉還して、荒馬14騎、稚児行列を先導に町内を巡行する「お旅神事」の中でも、19台のオシャギリ（屋台山車）は圧巻です。彫刻を施し、村上伝統の堆朱・堆黒の粋をこらしたオシャギリの中には、200年以上前の作のものもあり、まさに絢爛たる美しさです。
It is believed that the festival began with the installation of Haguro-jinja Shrine, when the people of Omachi paraded through the town with drums on two-wheeled carts.
3 portable mikoshi shrines which restore the holy spirits, 14 Arauma cavalry, and children in traditional costumes, parade through the town. Among this “ritual journey”, 19 oshagiri floats is a masterpiece to see.
