花笠まつりは、スゲ笠に赤い花飾りをつけた花笠を手にし、「花笠音頭」にあわせて街を踊り練りあるくお祭りです。東北４大祭りの１つといわれ、フラワーハットダンスとして有名です。総勢約１万3千人（約150団体）の踊り手が市内目抜き通りをパレードします。踊り手はグループごとに統一した衣装で、各々が趣向を凝らした踊りで祭りを盛り上げます。飛び入り参加も可能です。

With straw hats adorned in red flowers, dancers parade down the streets to traditional hanagasa ondo music at the Hanagasa Festival. The flower hat dance is famous and is a part of one of the four largest festivals in the Tohoku region. About 13,000 dancers (around 150 organizations) parade down the main street of the city.
