祖霊たちを送る盆の八月十六日。出羽の山並みに日が沈むころ、 羽後町西馬音内に寄せ太鼓の囃子が鳴り響きます。 やがて、着飾った子供たちが、篝火のたかれた本町通りで音頭の踊りを披露し、三日間にわたる盆踊りが幕を開けます。 およそ七百年前に始まったとされる西馬音内盆踊り。

A bon festival held on August 16th to send off the ancestral spirits. When the sun goes down along the Dewa Mountain range, you can hear a drum dance music in Ugo-cho Nishimonai. Children dressed in the festival attire come out and dance to the music around the bonfire on Honcho Street. This signals the start of the 3 day bon dance festival. A bon dance tradition that started about 700 years ago in Nishimonai.
