江戸時代に、ふりかかった災難を出羽三山信仰によるご利益で解決したことから始まったと伝えられている行事。毎年１月7日の早朝に地区の若衆が極寒の海に飛び込み、５ｍ余りの竹の先に御幣をつけた「梵天」を海中に立て、海岸では般若心経を唱え、五穀豊穣・浜大漁などを祈願する。成人を迎える若者が中心となる一種の成人儀礼として、300年以上の歴史を誇る。

The Ritual is said to have started in Edo period when a disaster was solved by the benefit of Dewasanzan faith. On the early morning of January 7, young men from the area jump into the coldest ocean to stand "Bonten" which has bamboo wands of over 5 m with Shinto streamers at the end in the ocean while people on the land recite Hannyashingyo (Heart Sutra) to pray for bumper crop and good catch. This ritual has a history of over 300 years as one of the rites of passage to be an adult, where young men take a leading part.
