江戸時代に北上川河口部の改修を行い、石巻発展の礎を築いた川村孫兵衛の偉業を讃えるとともに、海難事故、水難事故によって亡くなった英霊を供養するために行われる祭りです。イベントを前に、供養祭や川施餓鬼供養祭などの祭典行事が執り行われており、川開き祭りは、川の恵みに感謝するとともに、ご先祖様の供養のためにも行われています。孫兵衛船競漕や陸上パレード、花火なども行われます。

The festival that honor the feat of Sonbee Kawamura who repaired the mouth of Kitakami river, and laid the foundation of Ishikami’s development, and also to hold a memorial service for spirits of people who died from marine and water accidents. Sonbee Ship competition, land parade, and fireworks display will take place.
