お正月の火祭り行事「とんど焼き」。古来から大きな火は不浄なものを清め、とんど焼きの炎が高く燃え上がるほどにご利益があるとされる。
御所市の吉祥草寺に伝わる“大とんど”は、全国的に見ても最大級の規模でもちろん奈良では一番大きいもの。雄雌一対の大松明は、高さ6メートルにもなり、1300年の歴史を持つと言われる。

Tondoyaki is a New Year’s Fire Festival event. Back from the old day, fire has been considered to cleanse the unclean, and so it is said that the higher up the flames of the Tondoyaki go, the better luck it brings.
The Dai-Tondo that is performed in Kisshosoji Temple in Gose City, is one of the largest sizes in the nation, and is the largest in Nara. A pair of grand sized torches, each at 6 me-ters tall, have a history of 1,300 years.
