除夜から新年を迎え初詣で賑わう中、拝殿の奥から拝受された御神火が大松明にうつされる。3本の大松明は、神職を先頭に氏子の若者により狭井神社や桧原神社など三輪山の麓に鎮座する摂社・末社を駆け巡る。最後に若宮神社をまわって本社に帰ってくる頃には、夜明け前ごろになるが、この松明の火を火縄などにうつして持ち帰り神棚の火や雑煮を炊く火に使う慣わしがある。

While festivities thrive between the turn of the year to the sun rise, the holy fire brought out from the worshiping building of the shrine to light the grand torches. The 3 grand torches are taken to the various shrines, such as the Sai Shrine, Hibara Shrine, and other shrines by Mount Miwa by a priest heading the parishioners. Lastly, it visits the Wakamiya Shrine, and returns back to the main shrine building, by when the sun has risen and by tradition the fire is transferred from the torch to the wick to take home to light the family altar or to cook zoni.
