古式にのっとって火きり臼と火きり杵できりだされた御神火は、大晦日の午後7時、除夜祭斎行ののち、宮司以下祭員によって、境内に吊された灯籠にともされ、人びとの願いを記した「をけら木」とともに、夜を徹して(大晦日午後7時半頃～元旦早朝まで)焚かれます。「をけら火」を正月の雑煮を炊くときの火種として、八坂神社から頂戴する風習は今もなお受け継がれています。吉兆縄と呼ばれる火縄に火種をうつし、くるくると回しながら家に持ち帰り、若水をわかして雑煮を炊き、新年の無病息災を願います。

Creating deified fire following old traditions using a board and stick, at 7
PM on New Year's Eve, after carrying out of Joya Festival, the chief priest and priests light the lanterns hanging in the Shrine grounds with the fire all night (7:30 PM on New Year’s Eve through early morning on New Year Day). Okera fire is used to cook New Year’s Day zouni food, a tradition passed from Yasaka Shrine continues to this day. The fire is trans-ferred to a wick called Kisshounawa, and is taken home while swinging it around, and used to boil the first drawn water from the well to make the zoni, all to pray for sound health for the year.
