ふるさと観光上市まつりは｢帰ってきたいふるさと」をテーマに毎年西中町商店街で行われています。上市音頭町流し・よさこい・納涼夜店屋台、歌謡ショーなどで賑わいます。2日目に上市川河川敷で行われる「精霊やぐらやき」は「におとんぼ」と呼ばれる竹や枝で組んだ高さ約10m以上にもなる櫓に火を入れ「しょうらいこ」と口々に祖先の霊を呼びながら『精霊ダマ』をまわします。お盆の迎え火とする幻想的な風景が見どころです。フィナーレを飾る打ち上げ花火も楽しむ事が出来ます。

This festival is held every year in the Nishinaka-cho shopping district as a way to “bring people back to Furusato”. On the second day people gather at the Kamiichikawa riverbed where the “Spirit Tower Burning” happens. Here people throw fire into the bonfire, which is made by bamboo and branches, and called “niotonbo” that can get up to 33-feet-tall, while calling to the spirits for a good future and rotating “seirei dama” or “spirit balls”. The burning fire creates a fantastic scene to start obon.
