能登島向田の火祭は日本三大火祭りの一つで、ダイナミックな夏祭りです。伝説では越後の伊夜比古神（男神）が訪れ、伊夜比咩神（女神）と年に一度の逢瀬を楽しむお祭りとなっています。男衆が伊夜比咩神社から神輿と大小7基のキリコ(奉灯)を崎山お旅所まで担ぎ出し、高さ30mもの大松明に手松明を投げつけて点火します。大松明は火柱となって燃えさかり、燃えつきた松明の倒れた方向によってその年の豊漁、豊作を占います。また、柱松明の先につけられている御幣を取ったものは延命息災が叶うと言われています。

This dynamic summer festival is one of the three largest fire festivals in Japan. Legend says that the festival began when the god Echigo Iyahikogami and goddess Iyahimine meet once a year. Men group carry the portable mikoshi shrines from Iyahime Shrine along with 7 large and small kiriko lantern floats, and carry then to Sakiyama where there they hurl torches onto a 100-foot-tall bonfire. The burning torches turn the bonfire into a pillar of flame, and the direction the burning torches fall determines the fortune for if there will be a good harvest of crops and fish.
