宇部まつりは、昭和９年に、商工会議所の主唱で始まった祭りです。もともとは市制記念日の祝賀行事に端を発し、当時は「炭都祭」と称していました。昭和３７年には市民総参加の祭りという意味で、「宇部まつり」と改称し、今日では環境先進都市、宇部の元気を発信する祭りとして、魅力的に生まれ変わり、宇部近郊はもとより山口県内外から多くの皆様に参加して頂いています。

Ube Festival started in Showa 9 (1934) by the suggestion of the chamber of commerce.
It originally had the roots in an anniversary of the municipal administration, it was called "Coal mine festival" then. In Showa 37 (1962), the name was changed to the "Ube Festival" meaning the festival all citizens participate in. Today the festival is born again alluringly to send out the power of Ube that is an environmentally advanced city. Many people participate from Ube and its surroundings, and not just from inside Yamaguchi prefecture, but from outside as well.
