山口に夏の訪れを告げる山口祇園祭は、室町時代に大内氏が京都から歓請した八坂神社の例祭で、現在に至るまで約６００年もの間続いている伝統あるお祭りです。

This is a 600-year-old traditional festival and is one of Yamaguchi’s three major festivals besides Yamaguchi Tanabata Lantern Festival, and Yaguchi Tenjin Festival. 400 people carry portable shrines just under 1.3 miles from the Yasaka Shrine to the festival location where “urayasu dance” and the “dance of the heron ritual”, which are Intangible Folk Cultural Propertys of prefecture, are performed. Another local dance, the “Yamaguchi Minakoi Nonta” is also performed. On the last day, the gods are returned to Yasaka Shrine by women bearing the portable shrines.
