毎年旧暦6月17日大潮の日に執り行われる海上渡御を目的とした祭りで、大阪の“天神祭”、松江の“ホーランエンヤ”とともに日本三大船神事にかぞえられる嚴島神社最大の神事です。
管絃祭の歴史は平安時代に貴族の「管絃遊び」を海上渡御として平清盛が信仰する厳島神社で、神事として行うようになりました。
Every year on June 17 of the Old Japanese calendar, a festival with a purpose of transfer-ring of the deity on the spring tide, the Itsukushima Shrine's largest Shinto ritual is considered as one of Japan's Top Three Grand Boat Shinto Rituals along with Osaka's Tenjinmatsuri and Matsue's Ho-ranenya.
The history of Kangensai goes back to the Heian Period, when the aristocrats had the Kangenasobi, and Tairano Kiyomori used it as a ritual of transferring the deity on the waters at Itsukushima Shrine.
