明暦３年（１６５７）江戸に大火があり、この日を厄日と定め火防祈願とか防戦伝を兼ねた祭りとして始まったものと伝えられている。今日では、火防祈願、無病息災、大願成就を祈願し厄年の男たちは裸で町の中を走り抜け、人々は桶を持って待ち構え、諸々の願いをこめて男達に水を浴びせかけるという祭りである。先頭を切って走る厄男の持つ旗には「火防御祈祷」としたためられている。
