この行事は、京都御所で行われていた正月の火祭“左義長(さぎちょう)”の吉書焼きの遺風をうつしたものであり、鎌倉初期に二階堂氏が六郷の地頭となり、鎌倉幕府の“吉書初め”の行事をもたらしたものといわれています。豊作祈願の火祭として700年余りも続く、貴重な小正月行事です。

This event simulates "Sagicho", a New Year’s Fire Festival, originally held in Kyoto Gosho to burn the first calligraphy of the year. It is said that the Nikaido clan became a lord of a manor in early Kamakura Period and brought this ritual. This fire festival is held for over 700 years praying for good harvest in first full moon valuable festival.
