新年を祝う江戸時代中期から続く伝統行事です。宝来船で下流の金毘羅宮を出発して上流の若宮八幡を目指します。岸へ近づくと観客めがけて船上から紅白の縁起餅がまかれ、観客から祝儀が差し出されると、若者が厳寒の川に飛びこみ受け取りにいくさまは壮観です。大分県選択無形民俗文化財に指定されています。

The traditional event has been continued since the middle of Edo period to celebrate the New Year.
Horai boats depart the Konpiragu Shrine which is the lower courses of a river and head up for Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine.
It is a spectacular sight when red and white good luck rice cakes are thrown to the spectators from the boats as they get closer to the bank, and also when spectators hand out gratuities, young men jump into the extreme cold river to receive them.
It is registered as a Selected Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties by Oita prefec-ture.
