大分県三大祇園祭に数えられる580年以上の伝統を誇るお祭りです。大分県の無形民俗文化財にも指定され、中津神社を中心として行われる「上祇園」と、闇無浜神社を中心として行われる「下祇園」から成ります。祇園車と呼ばれる13台の漆塗りの華麗な山車や神輿が街を巡り、初日には花火大会も催され、祭りに華を添えます。

This festival is over 580 years old, is one of the three major Gion Festivals of Oita Prefecture, and is a recognized Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Oita Prefecture. Nakatsu Shrine is the focus of the “kami-gion” (upper gion) and Kuranashi Beach Shrine is the focus of the “shimo-gion” (lower gion) rituals. There are 13 beautifully crafted lacquerware floats and portable shrines called gion-sha which parade around the city. Fireworks are held on the first day that decorate the festival.
