盆前に死去した人の遺族が、故人の霊を弔うために手作りの船を造り、船を曳きながら街中を練り歩き、極楽浄土へ送り出すという長崎の伝統行事です。夕暮れ時に始まる行列では、鐘の音とかけ声、そして爆竹の音が夜遅くまで鳴り響きます。

Before the season of Bon, the ancestors and relatives of people who have died before Bon make boats for those who have passed away to mourn the spirits. In Nagasaki, it’s tradition that these boats are paraded around town before being sent onto paradise. The sound of bells, shouting and firecrackers can be heard late into the night.
