室町時代に始まった領主への年賀行事「博多松囃子（はかたまつばやし）」を原型とする祭りです。
「どんたく」は、明治時代に一時禁止されていた「松囃子」を復活させる際に、オランダ語で休日を意味する「ゾンターク」から名付けられたと言われています。
その後、昭和３７年に福岡市民の祭りとして位置づけられ、「博多どんたく港まつり」がスタートしました。現在では、市内３０以上の演舞台でパレードやステージイベントが繰り広げられ、街は祭一色、大変多くの人で賑わいます。

The festival is based on "Hakata Matsubayashi" which is the New Year event to the lord started in the Muromachi period.
It is told that, "Dontaku" is named after Dutch word "zondag" meaning holiday when restoring "Matsubayashi" which was prohibited temporary during the Meiji period.
Then "Hakata Dontaku Minato Festival" was positioned as a festival for Fukuoka citizens in Showa 37 (1962) and started.
Today parades and stage events are held on more than 30 performance stages in the city, the town is filled with a festival atmosphere and is crowded with many people.
