毎年30万人を超える人が訪れる大牟田の夏の風物詩「大蛇山」。
大蛇を模した長さ10m以上もある各地区の山車「大蛇山」が、裂けるように開いた口から火花をまきちらしつつ練り歩きます。この大蛇に子どもをかんでもらい無病息災を願う儀式「かませ」は、地元の人なら一度は経験する儀式です。その他にも、総踊りや、炭坑節強宴会なども催されます。

Every year 30,000 people go to Omuta’s traditional “daijayama” or “large snake mountain” festival. The floats from each district imitate giant snakes that are over 33-feet-long, and they parade around town while sprinkler fireworks are set off from their open mouths. The “kamase” ceremony prays for good health as the large snakes ‘bite’ children, and is a ritual all the locals have experienced.
