江戸幕府の庇護を受け、江戸城内に祭礼行列が練りこみ、将軍・御台所の上覧があったことなどから、江戸の庶民たちからいつからか「天下祭」と称されるようになった。また、全国的に有名な祭のひとつとして「日本三大祭り」「江戸三大祭り」の中に数えられている。

With permission from the Edo Government, the parade was allowed into the Edo Castle for viewing by the Shogun and wives, and hence was called the Tenka-sai by the commoners. Again, it is also known as one of Japan's Three Grand Festivals and one of the Edo Three Grand Festivals.
