OTARIYA

For the citizens of Utsunomiya, the night festival of Futaarayama Shrine marks the end of the year and the conclusion of the New Year's celebrations. The origins of this festival date back to as early as 838 AD, commemorating the return of the deity from Araosaki, where the lower shrine (formerly west of PARCO) was located, to Usugamine, the current location of the shrine.

Traditionally, shrine re-enshrinement ceremonies are conducted at night, and this was the case for Futaarayama Shrine as well. This nighttime ceremony came to be known as "Watariyoku," which later evolved into the term "Otaruya." Over time, the festival also became known for giving thanks for divine blessings and, from the early Edo period, for its reputation as a fire prevention festival.

The festival is held in two parts: "Fuyu Watari-sai" in December and "Haru Watari-sai" in January, both referred to as "Otaruya." On Otaruya day, the festival features a nighttime procession of mikoshi (portable shrines) and the dedication of the Dengaku dance, a designated cultural property of Utsunomiya City.
