静岡県島田の「帯祭り」愛知県国府宮の「はだか祭り」と並んで日本三奇祭に数えられる祭で、国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定されています。
約1キロにおよぶ本町通りに組まれた大松明に次々と火が灯され、上吉田の町は火の海と化し深夜まで賑わいます。
One of the 3 Strange Festivals in Japan along with "Obi Festival" in Shimada, Shizuoka prefecture and "Naked Festival" in Konomiya, Aichi prefecture, and it is registered as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset.
Big built torches are lighted up one after another on Honcho-tori for 1 km distance, a town of Kamiyoshida turns into a sea of flames and bustled till very late at night.
