善光寺にある木像「賓頭盧尊者」の名前に由来するお祭りで、市民参加型の祭であることから「長野市民祭」とも言われます。
昼間からステージや屋台、みこしかつぎなどのイベントが行われ、夜には200以上のグループが「連」と呼ばれる単位で参加して踊ります。
