江戸時代の中頃、魚津で、大火が続いたので「防火意識を高めよう」と、火消しのまといに似せた大御幣を作り、火伏せの神様が祭られている愛宕社に奉納したことが始まりと伝えられています。大御幣は、高さ5～6mもある青竹の竿頭に榊をさし、火籬、天狗・おかめのお面を、扇子に麻をかけたものを付け、そこから金銀白などの長く切った紙をさげたものです。大御幣は人間の姿を表し、天狗の面は災いを除き、おかめは福を招くといい、これを燃納することによって、新しい年の平穏無事を神に祈ります。

It is said that the festival began in the middle of the Edo period (1603-1867) when, in response to a series of large fires in Uozu, people made omohide, which resembled the traditional fire extinguisher's uniform, and dedicated it to Atago Shrine, where the god of fire prevention was enshrined. The omohide is a 5-6 meter high pole made of green bamboo, to which is attached a sakaki (sakaki), masks of a fire wagon, tengu, and okame, and a fan covered with hemp, from which is hung a long piece of gold, silver, or white paper. By burning these masks, people pray to the gods for a peaceful and safe new year.
