大綱引当日に朝から約１,５００人の人々が３３０本の縄から半日かけて練り上げる長さ３６５ｍ、重さ７トンの大綱を約３,０００人の上半身裸にサラシを巻いた‘ハダカ’と呼ばれる男たちが一斉に引き合い、そして相手の引き隊を邪魔するために相手陣内に押し込んでいく押し隊と呼ばれる男たちの体と体が激しくぶつかり合う様が見る物を圧倒する勇壮な綱引です。
歴史は長く、410年以上続く伝統行事です。一説には関ヶ原の戦いの際に士気を高めるために島津義弘が始めたと言われています。

About 1500 people weave the 365 m long and 7 ton in weight giant rope taking a half day from the morning of the grand tug-of-war event. 3000 men called "Hadaka" who are naked from the waist up and wrapped with Sarashi fabric pull the giant rope all at once, and pushing groups go into the enemy position to interrupt other pulling groups. It is a thrilling festival and the way men's bodies bump into each other aggressively overwhelm everyone to watch.
The traditional event has a history of over 410 years. It is registered as an Intangible Folk Cultural Assets of Kagoshima Prefecture.
