姫路ゆかたまつりは、長壁神社の例祭からはじまったといわれ、寛保二年（１７４２年）５月、当時の姫路城主・榊原政岑公が、越後高田へ移封の際に、長源寺の境内に祠を造って城内の長壁神社を遷し、遷座祭を開催したことが起源となっています。
このまつりに奉仕する人々は、あまりにも事が急で式服を作る暇もなかったので、ゆかたを着たことから、以後毎年参拝する人々がそれにならってゆかたを着るようになり、やがて「ゆかたまつり」と呼ばれるようになりました。

The Himeji Yukata Festival is said to have started as Osakabe Shrines annual festival in May 1742, when the lord of the Himeji Castle, Masamine Sakakibara, was forced to relo-cate to Echigotakada. He built a small shrine in the Chogenji Temple grounds and moved the Osakabe Shrine which was within the castle grounds, and held a ceremonial festival in celebration of the moving of the deity.
Since the service people of this festival were in such a hurry and had no time to prepare for ritual clothing, they wore yukata's, which is the reason why participants today wear the yukata to worship at this festival every year.
