民俗芸能の宝庫と言われる北上市で、街のあちこちで１００を越す民俗芸能が披露されるのが「北上・みちのく芸能まつり」です。
まつりの２日目の夜にＪＲ北上駅前の大通りで開催する民俗芸能公演では500ｍの道路を8つの会場に分け様々な民俗芸能を見ることができます。特に「鬼剣舞大群舞」は、かがり火の前で２００人の踊り手がいっせいに舞い、激しく荘厳です。
また、まつりのフィナーレでは北上河畔での花火大会と灯篭流しが行われます。

Around 100 pieces of folk art are displayed around the town during the Kitakami Michinoku Traditional Dance Festival. The large Demon Sword Dance in particular has around 200 people dancing in front of a fire, making it very impressive.
The festival finale consists of a paper lanterns floated down the river and a large fireworks display on the north of the river.
