犬っこまつりは元和の昔より約400年もの長い間続いたといわれる湯沢地方の民俗行事です。そのころ、白昼堂々と人家を襲う「白討(はくとう)」という大盗賊がいましたが、湯沢の殿様がこれら一味を退治し、再びこのような悪党が現れないようにと、米の粉で小さな犬っこや鶴亀を作らせ、旧小正月の晩に、これを家の入口や窓々にお供えして祈念させたのが、この犬っこまつりの始まりとされています。

Inukko Festival is a folk event which started 400 years ago (at the time of the Japanese era called Genna) in Yuzawa area. It is told that this festival started when the load exterminated a robber group called "Hakuto" who trespassed openly in broad daylight. The load made his people to make small dogs, cranes or turtles by rice flour and offer them by the doors and windows so that villains would not appear again.
