江戸時代、天明年間の飢饉で大凶作が続いた際、上総作田の住人が五穀豊穣と厄病の退散を祈願し獅子舞を演じて近辺に普及させたのが始まりと言われ、地区内30戸あまりの家々を一軒ずつ回って獅子舞が舞われる。獅子舞の演目には、高さ12mの梯子の上で舞うものや、獅子が登場する寸劇のような構成のものなどがあり、観る者を飽きさせない。

It is told that in Edo Period when bad harvest due to the famine continued during Tenmei years, people in Kazusasakuda started to perform Shishimai praying for bumper crop and plague off. Shishimai visit over 30 houses in the area. Some Shishimai programs include Shishimai dance on top of 12 m ladder and some are something like skits, which entertain the audiences well.
