初市は最上義光公(1546～1614)治世の江戸時代初期から続く伝統行事です。当時定期の市が立つ町が点在するなか、それらの市の中心となる十日町に市神様を祀り、毎年1月10日に開催された市が「初市」として続いています。

文翔館に隣接する湯殿山神社には、市神様が祀られていますので、初市とあわせて訪れてみるのもおすすめです。　

当日は、商業の株を象徴しての「蕪」、長寿を表す「白ひげ」などの野菜、初あめ、だんご木などの縁起物、臼、杵、まな板などの家庭用品のお店や一般露店が約150軒立ち並びます。十日町付近（山形まるごと館 紅の蔵前など）にはキッチンカーゾーンが設けられます。

Hatsuichi is a traditional event that has continued since the early Edo period during the reign of Yoshimitsu Mogami (1546-1614).
