毎年１月14日，大津の念仏寺陀々堂では500年の伝統を誇る火の祭典「鬼走り」が行われます。燃えさかるたいまつを振りかざした父鬼・母鬼・子鬼が堂内を豪快に走り回り，住民の災厄を払います。鬼が幸いをもたらすのは各地でも珍しく，厳寒の中，多くの参拝者が訪れます。平成７年には本市で初めて，国の重要無形民俗文化財の指定を受けました。

The fire festival Onihashiri event is held annually on January 14th at Otsu's Nenbutsuji Temple, with a tradition and history of 500 years. Chichioni, Hahaoni and Kooni run around the grounds while holding a burning torch to ward bad luck off of the residents. It is very unusual that the Oni bring peace and prosperity, and so many worshipers come to visit even in the extreme cold season. In 1995, for the first time in this city a Festival was registered as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset.
