山あげ祭は、山と呼ばれる網代状に竹を 組んだ木枠に烏山特産の烏山和紙を幾重にも貼りその上に山水を描いた「はり か山」をその「山」を人力で揚げる事から、「山あげ祭」と呼ばれるようになりました。
「山」は常磐津所作（踊り）の舞台背景として揚げられ、観客の前に据えられた舞台から道路上約百メートルの間に百名に及ぶ当番町若衆が一糸乱れぬ団体行動のなか向拝、座敷、波松、舘、前山、中山、大山等が瞬く間に遠近よく配置されます。そして、常磐津の三味線と唄にのって、町の踊子が洗練された美しい踊りを披露する日本一の野外劇です。

The Yama-age Festival, or Mountain Raising Festival, is so called because
Bamboo wickerwork called mountain is attached to a wooden frame, and layers upon layers of special karasuyama paper are stuck on to create a landscape of “harika mountain”. The “mountain” is believed to give people strength.
Then, in one of Japan’s open air theatres, tokiwazu shamisen are played by musicians to accompany a beautifully perfected dance.
