益子祇園祭

祇園祭は1705年(宝永2)頃疫病が流行し、天王信仰により祭りを行い、怨霊や疫病を鎮めたことに始まる祭り。鹿島神社境内末社の八坂神社の祭礼で昔は天王祭と呼ばれていました。
両手で持つ「手筒花火」と片手で持つ「小型手筒花火」の打ち上げや江戸時代から伝わる町指定の民俗文化財「御神酒頂戴式」が行われます。
「御神酒頂戴式」は、1年365日になぞり、大杯になみなみと注がれた3升6合５勺(約6.5リットル)の熱爛３杯を飲み干す儀式です。関東参大奇祭のひとつに数えられるこの儀式はこの祭り最大の見所です。
This Gion festival originated in 1705 during a time of pestilence, so the locals held a festival to the deity Tenno to banish evil spirits and plagues.
Small hand held fireworks are carried around in one or both hands, and a “Ceremony of Receiving Japanese Sake from Deities” (Omiki Chodai Shiki), which is a Folk Cultural Asset, is performed.
At the Ceremony of Receiving Japanese Sake from Deities, gentlemen from the community must drink sake from three extremely large cups, which are 3-sho, 6-go and 5-shaku (approx. 6.5 liters), symbolizing the 365 days in a year. This is one of Kanto’s largest odd festivals with this ceremony which attracts the most spectators.
