福岡県博多で毎年7月1日から15日にかけて開催される700年以上の歴史を誇る祭です。
華やかに彩られた山笠と呼ばれる山車を荒々しい男達が担いで練り歩くこの祭りは、国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定されています。期間中、参加者はキュウリを食べる事が御法度です。また、女性が担ぎ手にはなれず、担ぎ手の詰め所にも入る事はできない女人禁制の祭りでもあります。

This festival in Hakata in Fukuoka Prefecture is over 700 years old and has been designated as a Significant Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Brightly colored floats called yamagasa are pulled by energetic men. Women can’t be float bearers and are forbidden from entering cramped places with the male bearers. Eating cucumber is also banned during the festival.
