西海祭は、大漁祈願、航海の安全祈願のために始まったお祭りです。天昭皇大神、豊愛大神、事代主命を祀る西海神社と松ヶ下神社から夕刻にそれぞれ繰り出した神輿がキリコ、鉦、太鼓を伴ってお互いの地区内を祭り唄をうたいながら巡行します。途中、両地区の堺に遭遇する場所では、すべてが倍加したように壮快であり迫力があります。祭の特徴としては、女性も参加する祭りとなっている点です。キリコを担ぐ女性の姿はおこしに浴衣、前掛け、そして足袋にワラジという姿で、男性の姿も白いワイシャツに黒いチョッキ、白いパンツにゲートル、同じく足袋にワラジ姿といった一見変わった格好でキリコを担ぎます。キリコや神輿が倒れたり、燃えたりするというハプニングもありのスリルのあるお祭りです。

This maritime festival prays for a large harvest of fish and safe travels out at sea. One special characteristic of this festival is that women can aslo participate in. This is an exciting festival where kiriko lantern floats and portable mikoshi shrines are paraded around and tilted precariously over without falling.
