平方祇園祭のどろいんきょは、疫病退散・五穀豊穣を祈念して盛大に行なわれています。
祭りでは、御輿の渡御が行なわれますが、このとき｢どろいんきょ｣と呼ばれる行事を行ないます。これは、神酒所である民家の庭に水を撒き、その上でさらに水を掛けながら、白木造りの｢いんきょ御輿｣を泥だらけにして転がすというものです。
｢どろいんきょ｣という名称や由来についてはよく分かっていませんが、古くなって隠居した御輿を祇園祭に担ぎ出して転がし、泥だらけにしたからであるとか、隠居した人たちが余興で担いだのが始まりであるなどという説が伝えられています。
The Heiho Doroinkyo Mud Festival is a huge event to chase away plagues and bad harvests. Portable shrines are carried around during the festival, but take part in an event called “doroinkyo”. Water is sprinkled on the homes and gardens near the sacred sake area in the shrine. Water is also sprinkled on the white wood inkyo portable shrines as they are carried into the mud and rolled around.
