1260年以上一度も休むことなく続く伝統行事で、 寒い真冬の夜に、大松明を持った童子（どうじ）が観客の頭上に火の粉を散らしながら舞台を回ります。 二月堂の本尊十一面観音に、東大寺の僧侶が人々にかわって罪を懺悔して国家の安泰と万民の豊楽を祈る法要です。3月12日深夜（13日の午前２時）には、「お水取り」といって、若狭井（わかさい）という井戸から観音さまにお供えする「お香水（おこうずい）」を汲み上げる儀式が行われます。

This traditional ritual has never suspended for over 1,260 years and Douji walk around the stage with torches showering falling sparks on spectators’ heads in the cold midwinter night. Priests from Todaiji Temple repent for people to the statue of the principal image of Buddha at Nigatsudo is Eleven-Headed Kannon to pray for peace and security of the nation, and prodigality and happiness of the whole nation. There is a ritual in the middle of the night of March 12th (2 AM on 13th) called "Omizutori", and "Okozui" water is drawn from Wakasai well to offer Kannon.
